New Mercedes CLS coupé will be available here early next yearFriday, September 03, 2010 Mercedes-Benz have released details of their new CLS coupé ahead of its world premiere at the forthcoming Paris motor show.
Billed as the first in a series of new models to be introduced by the Stuttgart manufacturer over the next 18 months, the new, four-door CLS will arrives in Ireland early next year. First released in 2003 as a stand-alone model (170,000 units have been sold), the new-edition CLS builds on the pioneering design of its predecessor. As before, it exudes a refined sense of sportiness, reflected in its elongated bonnet, frameless, low-slung, narrow windows, muscular shoulders and dynamic roofline that sweeps elegantly towards the rear. Its striking, low, wide grille, set forward from the headlights — a design distinctly reminiscent of the new SLS AMG — has a dominant element of a large star, underlining the car’s family link to other Mercedes-Benz coupés. Flared wheel arches and large air inlets, with black grilles, add to its athletic appearance. Another innovation is its LED headlamp design — a world first in applying this technology to all light functions. An army of 71 LEDs is arranged in three, arrow-shaped layers to provide indicator, sidelights, and low and main beam functions that give a vastly enhanced night view compared to traditional systems. Inside, a wrap-around cockpit design is the prominent feature, while a downward-sweeping door trim echoes the exterior line. Five colours, five trim designs, and three qualities of leather are available, so that each CLS can be configured according to taste. High-quality trim elements also include a choice of three wood finishes. Sharing the limelight with the new CLS, on the Mercedes-Benz stand at the Paris show, will be a display marking 125 years of the automobile — an anniversary that celebrates the invention, by Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, in 1886, of the world’s first motorcars.
